Most enquiries we get fit one of three jobs
If the mortar is recessed, crumbling or washing out over most of an elevation or chimney, the answer is usually full repointing. See our repointing services .
Around a downpipe, under a sill or at the base of a wall, a targeted repair is often enough. See our pointing repairs.
New walls and extensions, rebuilt sections, or brickwork where the joint style matters. That's what this page covers.
Not sure? Send us a photo or book a visit, and we’ll tell you honestly which it is.
The joint finish changes how a wall looks and how well it sheds rain. We match the original finish on older houses, and recommend one for new or exposed brickwork.
Mortar is finished level with the brick face, often brushed or rubbed back to show the sand. It suits older, softer or worn bricks with uneven edges, and is common on period houses repointed in lime.
The joint is angled, set slightly back under the brick above and flush at the bottom, so rain runs off the face of the wall. It's a practical choice for exposed walls and a common finish on 20th-century houses.
A rounded tool presses a shallow curved groove into the joint, which compresses the mortar and helps it shed water. It's one of the most common finishes on inter-war and modern brickwork.
The mortar is set back a few millimetres to create a shadow line. It looks crisp on some modern brickwork but leaves a small ledge that can hold water, so it isn't a good choice for exposed walls or soft bricks.
A traditional finish on many Georgian and Victorian London house fronts. The joints are filled with mortar coloured to match the bricks, then a fine raised line of lime putty is applied to make the brickwork look precise. It's slow, specialist work.
Raised "ribbon" or "strap" pointing, where mortar stands proud of the brick. It traps water against the brick edges, which can cause damage. We'll usually recommend replacing it.
“…The pointing looks flawless, and the walls now look brand new. Professional, tidy, and skilled — highly recommended!”
On most jobs the aim is that nobody can tell where the new pointing starts. We match
Lime mortar for older solid-walled houses; cement-based for most later brickwork. Our repointing service explains why this matters for period homes.
By choosing the sand and mix to suit the existing mortar. We mix a small test patch for you to approve before we start.
From the list above, matched to what’s there or to the original style.
New mortar always looks a little brighter at first and tones down as it weathers.

Pointing is the mortar finish at the face of the joints between bricks. It seals the joints against rain and gives the wall its finished look. Over time it weathers and needs renewing, which is called repointing.
Usually whatever the house was built with, which is often flush or slightly recessed lime pointing, and on some smarter fronts, tuck pointing. We look at surviving original joints before recommending a finish.
Mortar firms up within a day or so, but it takes several weeks to fully cure, and lime mortar takes longer than cement. Fresh pointing needs protecting from heavy rain, frost and strong sun for the first few days.
In most cases, yes. We match the mortar colour, texture and joint style, and new work tones down as it weathers.
Yes. We point new garden walls, extensions and rebuilt brickwork, matched to the existing house.
On an existing wall, people use the two words for the same job. Strictly, repointing means removing old mortar and replacing it. See our repointing services for how that's done.
